Amigos Resource Network organizes Hispanic Resource Fair in Bowling Green
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Amigos Resource Network in Bowling Green is working to make language less of a barrier for the local Latino population.
Members held a meeting today to discuss an upcoming Hispanic Resource Fair. Addi Hernandez is organizing that fair.
“Our goal is to have vendors of resources around Bowling Green, where providers offer services in Spanish or have somebody that speaks Spanish,” said Hernandez.
Things like understanding the legal system and accessing medical care can at times be impossible for those who don’t understand the language.
“Just recently I met with a former business owner whose driver’s license was suspended, because they had an outstanding tax bill. They didn’t realize that. They didn’t understand what was happening,” said Leyda Becker, international community liaison for the City of Bowling Green.
One of the major barriers that the local Latino community currently faces is knowing who to go to for help.
“It really makes it difficult to participate actively in the community and be engaged when the language is a barrier,” Becker said.
The Hispanic Resource Fair is meant to help people know where to begin when it comes to accessing important resources. It will be held on April 10.
