BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — An upcoming event is working to expand lifesaving skills within the Bowling Green community.

The American Red Cross says it is partnering with the South Central Workforce Development Board, the Goodwill Opportunity Center and the International Center of Kentucky to offer two free CPR and first aid certification courses in Spanish for members of Bowling Green’s Latino community.

The one-day training sessions are scheduled for Jan. 24 and Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Goodwill Opportunity Center at 1806 U.S. 31-W Bypass.

“The importance of CPR and First Aid cannot be overstated,” said Albert Mbanfu, executive director and CEO of the International Center of Kentucky. “Given their importance and the fact that language barriers can hinder the provision and reception of care, CPR training geared toward the Hispanic population is welcoming news, as it helps lift some of the language barriers we may encounter when emergency aid is needed. Focusing on the Hispanic community signals they are welcome to fully participate in the community’s socio-cultural, economic, and health development. The International Center is proud to support this initiative, and we thank the American Red Cross and Goodwill for their partnership. The Hispanic community will feel empowered.”

Participants who finish this course will receive CPR certification valid for two years, according to the American Red Cross.

In addition, the program will cover disaster preparedness, how to be Red Cross Ready and an overview of the Red Cross’s Restoring Family Links program. Spanish language support will be available, and lunch will be provided, according to the organization.
