Amazon funds expand computer science education at a local high school
EDMONTON, Ky.- Metcalfe County High School now has yet another way to offer opportunities for the Hornets to excel. The school has been selected to join the Amazon Future Engineer program, which means funding will be received to bring expanded computer science classes to students. Teachers like information technology teacher Justin Smith are thrilled about the news.
“I was happy for our school and our district because as a district of innovation, we’re always looking for innovative ways to bring everything to our students and this was just another avenue that we could bring new programs and enhance our current programs,” Smith said.
With the support of Amazon, the school will offer introductory and advanced placement computer science courses. The course work can also be done digitally.
“Before, I was wondering how I was going to offer these courses to virtual students and in-person students and give them the same curriculum. This was the answer I needed. It was the one that opened that door,” Smith said.
Students here will be joining 550,000 other students across more than 5,000 schools nationwide that will benefit from this program, and the staff can’t wait to have the students back to break in the new courses and explore new opportunities.
“I think what it tells us about our school district is that we’re going to find opportunities for our students. What I’ve seen from my tenure being here, if it’s out there, Metcalfe County High School teachers are going to find it. I’m blessed to be here,” said Metcalfe County High School principal Clint Graham.
