Allen named Metcalfe County Athletic Director

EDMONTON, Ky. – Metcalfe County didn’t have to go very far to find its new Athletic Director.
The Hornets announced John Allen as the new Athletic Director on Friday.
A teacher at Metcalfe County Schools for 24 years, Allen has served as a coach of basketball, golf and cross country.
“I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as the next athletic director of Metcalfe County Schools,” Allen said. “I have a lifelong passion for sports, especially Hornet sports, and I’m excited to start this new journey. I look forward to working with all of our talented coaches, parents, student-athletes, and community to continue building strong programs for our kids.”
Superintendent Josh Hurt said, “Mr. Allen brings a great deal of experience in the world of interscholastic athletics. I look forward to the work he will do to make sure our sports programs continue to grow in participation and quality. I know his top priority will be ensuring a high quality student-athlete experience.”
Allen assumes the role following the departure of Matt Shirley, who served Metcalfe County Schools for six years. Shirley will continue his role as the district’s director of innovative learning and facilities director.
Shirley said, “We are very fortunate to have Mr. Allen, with his vast experience, take over the leadership role of our sports department. He will do an excellent job. It has been an honor to serve as the director of athletics and witness the successes of so many of our student-athletes.”
Allen played collegiate basketball at Eastern Kentucky University. Allen’s standout career led to his induction into the Colonels Hall of Fame and All-Century Basketball Team in 2010. Allen is the fourth all-time leading scorer in Colonel history with 1,635 points.
