Alabama adopts sweeping abortion ban

(NBC News) The Alabama State Senate approved a bill Tuesday to outlaw nearly all abortions in the state.

According to the measure, a doctor performing an abortion at nearly any stage of pregnancy could be charged with a felony and face 99 years in prison.

There is one exception, though, and that’s for serious health risks to the mother.

Critics say the bill is unconstitutional.

“I’m appalled. I think its a set back for the women of Alabama,” says Alabama state Senator Linda Coleman-Madison. “Not only the women of Alabama, but the women of the whole United States.

The bill’s sponsor readily admits her goal is to get America’s highest court to review the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which gives women the right to choose when it comes to an abortion.

Alabama’s Republican Governor will now have six days to sign the legislation.
