African American Museum in BG hosts grand reopening

BOWLING GREEN Ky. – The African American Museum in Bowling Green is reopening after suffering damage from not only the 2021 tornado, but also an electrical fire that effectively gutted the inside of the structure.

Most of the exhibits have been returned to the building after being inspected and cleaned. The museum is going to be operating at reduced capacity through appointment-only entry for the time being while work to restore and clean a great deal of their collection over the coming months.

Maxine Ray, vice chair of the board at the museum, says cleaning these objects takes a great deal of time.

“We’ve accomplished a lot that lets us feel like we have accomplished a lot, but we still have a long way to go,” Ray said.
