African and Afghanistan communities come together for unique lunch
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Two cultures are coming together to share a lunch with the community.
The CARE program in Bowling Green hosted a lunch featuring different foods from Africa and Afghanistan.
This is part of their Empowerment initiative for refugee and immigrant women in the community.
This week featured African spaghetti, bread, an Afghan beef stew and a spiced rice.
However, for one African immigrant, it’s not just about the meals.
“This is expressing our culture. It’s expressing our values, how we like sharing everything, but also it means to empower women. Women need to be empowered. We have a lot of things that we like doing when we are back in our countries, but we are not able to do it here. By coming together and doing what we are doing right now, it empowers us,” Elinami Mkanta says.
The lunch takes place every Monday from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. at SOKY Marketplace.
There will not be a lunch on Nov. 20, however, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
