Advice for gifting pets for the holidays
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Buying the perfect gift for friends or family can be challenging. Some result to getting a furry friend, but it is important to be cautious.
According to a study conducted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, 39% of pet owners gift pets as presents during the holidays. The organization also found that 96% of people said receiving a pet as a gift increased their love or attachment to that animal.
The organization adds that receiving a pet as a gift would come to a shock for most. An animal is a long term commitment. However, there are alternative options instead of gifting a dog or cat.
Makayla Lowe-Sikes, Vet and Kennel Tech at Butler County Animal Shelter, says there are various related “routes.” She adds that “sponsoring an adoption fee, purchasing animal supplies, or even going with your loved one to look at animals.”
Officials say to take advantage of resources at your local shelter, like medical care, information fliers, or food supplies. Participating in programs like foster-to-adopt can help in the deciding process, too.
