Abundance of Hart distributes food to Hart County community

MUNFORDVILLE, Ky. – The Hart County community has come together to host a food distribution that’s the hot spot of Munfordville each month.

Pastor Phillip Trent with Immanuel Ministry Church in Legrande explains how Abundance of Hart got its name:

“Twenty-five years ago, I got a call from a gentleman to see if I would be interested in starting a food bank here in Hart County. They were having a meeting at the jail, the Hart County Jail. So, I’d never been in jail before, but I came around to the back corner of the door, and I reached to open the door, and I saw a mini vision of a horn of plenty and a heart, and it said ‘The Abundance of Hart, H, A, R, T,” he says.

This is their 26th year of distributing food to the community, and they’ve made a huge impact during that time.

“We give it to those that are in need, and we have done over 5 million pounds to date. We are a partner with Feeding America in Elizabethtown. We have a number of people that deliver to those who are disabled to come and get the food, probably 150 or 60 families every month get food brought to them,” Trent says.

“We have people here at 6:30, 7 in the morning, and we don’t start till 8:30, 9. So there is a strong need. Most people plan their schedules around, so they’re not gone on that Friday,” volunteer Leon Sack added.

For reference, the gym at Munfordville Baptist Church was filled with 26,000 pounds of food Friday morning at about 9 a.m., and within four to five hours, all of it was gone, and that’s thanks to the support of the community.

“We’ve been on radio for 27 years and a TV program for 15 years, so a lot of people see us. I had a guy today say, ‘Well I know that voice, so you must be Brother Trent’ because he’d been listening to radio, but I’ve never met him. They ask you for their prayer concerns and the various things. So it’s not only food, but you help in every way that you possibly can,” Trent says.

“We wouldn’t be doing it without community support, and the more support we can get, the easier it is. During the school year, we have a lot of school kids, all your athletic groups, all your different activity groups. They all volunteer to get the word out to the people cause there are probably a lot more people out here that need it,” Sack added.
