Child abuse rises around holiday season

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For most people the holidays are filled with cheer and celebration, but there is a quiet secret that often haunts this time of year.

Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center said they see more children around the holiday season with an increase of guests staying in the home, schedules become hectic and there’s more to distract parents.

So, what conversation should parents have with their children?

Barren River Area Child Advocacy Center Community Outreach Coordinator Sabrina Durbin said it is, “Making sure your child knows that they, you know they don’t have to sit on so and so’s lap or they don’t have to accept any unwanted touch.”

The center wants to raise awareness about abuse, abuse prevention and the programs available for children.

ROAR, taught by Rex the Lion, teaches little kids the power of their voice- that they are in control of their bodies.

Also, the Darkness to Light program teaches the signs of abuse and different things to do if you suspect abuse or hear about it.
