Bowling Green Junior High School announces Black Male Scholars Program

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-A local middle school has announced a new program set to begin later in 2021. A program that will serve young African American students.

The Black Male Scholars Program at Bowling Green Junior High School will consist of two components; the black male scholars summer program and the sixth grade scholars’ program.

The summer program is a six-week program open to between 60 and 75 African American male students from grades six to eight. The sixth grade scholars’ program specifically for that grade will start fall of 2021.

These programs will have schedules including math, English, science, social studies and electives. Another goal is to focus on aspects including attire, communication and worldview. Principal Robert Lightning says he can’t wait to see students grow from the experience.

“I’m looking forward to each and every day seeing our young men continue to grow academically as well as socially and emotionally and increasing their sense of belonging here at Bowling Green Junior High School,” Lightning said.

BGJHS plans to grow the 6th grade program to grades six to eight to serve between 60 to 80 students in the future.
