SKYCTC hosts African American read-in event

BOWLING GREEN Ky.- During the month of February, schools, churches, and other venues are urged to make literacy an important part of Black History Month by hosting an African American read-in.

South Central Kentucky Community and Technical College in Bowling Green held its fourth annual African American read-in event Tuesday.

Students and faculty were encouraged to bring and read out loud a short poem or passage by an African American author.

The purpose of the read in was to highlight the importance of reading and literacy, and to celebrate the texts from African American authors.

Associate Professor of English, Leah Wendt, joined in on the read-in.

“I think my favorite part is the support I get from other faculty members and how they want to get their students involved and highlight the importance of this event and the reason we have Black History Month events,” said Wendt.

The African American read-in was established by Dr. Jerrie Scott in 1990, along with the Black Caucus of the National Council for Teachers of English.
