Innovative program aimed to challenge gifted students
A group of students from Bowling Green Independent Schools are getting a chance to experience learning in an innovative way.
“It’s just fun to like, see other kids, and have a challenge to do and get smarter.” says Landon.
Today, over 60, 5th grade students just like Landon gathered at the former 11th Street School.
It was the first day of Innovation Headquarters, also known as I-HQ, a program that allows gifted minds to explore.
“This course is great because we can take anything that is STEM and we can engage the students in things that are outside of their traditional curriculum in 5th grade. We can challenge them and present them with problem solving activities that they don’t normally get inside of the regular classroom.” says Leigh Anne Littlefield, an I-HQ instructional coach.
Gifted students come to the school every two weeks to experience a full day of learning and fun.
Kate is one student who loves being apart of the gifted program.
“My favorite thing is probably when we were in the chemistry corner doing experiments that I probably never would have thought to do, or learn, nothing, anything about that.” says Kate.
They get to experience hands on learning in chemistry, engineering, pre-algebra, numeracy, and coding.
“It’s important that they are together and it’s also important they build relationships because these are the kids that are going to be together all the way through Bowling Green High School. They are going to be together in advance courses at the junior high and AP courses together at the high school.” adds Littlefield.
Students in the program get to select 4 out of the 5 classes to attend.
