Russellville schools opens classroom with modern approach to education

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – Last week, Russellville Independent Schools held its grand opening of the Russellville 21st Century Center.

Russellville Independent Schools is now home to a unique facility that gives a more modern approach to education and students are already reaping the benefits.

The 50-year-old building formally known as the Russellville Area Technology Center is now home to the Russellville 21st Century Center.

The newly remodeled facility opened to students in August and houses various programs including a sixth-grade academy, which gives students a modern approach to education.

“It is for all of our sixth-grade students and we are using the Summit learning program. That really allows us to individualize their instruction with an in-class portion and a more of a self-directed learning aspect of it,” said sixth-grade teacher Kaylee Crowder.

Students are enjoying learning through technology compared to a traditional learning.

“I think it’s helping me more with technology because it explains more because it has directions and more stuff, so you can learn more about technology,” student Maddison Kimbrough said.

“Having computers, calculators, multiple classrooms, and a multipurpose room back there it’s a better experience to be honest,” student Jonathan Owen said.

The facility also contains an area designed just for seniors, a large multipurpose space for meetings, and a STEAM program geared for gifted students.

“I am very proud, very proud of the work our team has done. I tweeted out last week that I am so proud of our team. I am so grateful for the opportunities of learning that are going to be available for our students. The building is 50 years old, but it feels brand new in the renovated spaces. I think there is going to be fabulous learning taking place in the next half-century for Russellville Independent students,” superintendent Bart Flener said.

The renovations cost nearly $600,000.
