Western Kentucky University holds funeral for legendary coach Jim Richards
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Former Western Kentucky University men’s basketball head coach Jim Richards was laid to rest Tuesday following a funeral service held at E.A. Diddle Area.
Richards passed away Friday, October 9, at the age of 90.
The university held the service inside the arena where Richards spent seven seasons coaching the Hilltoppers.
“I am sure my words will not adequately describe a man who had such a profound effect on all of our lives,” Scott Ray said, who played under Richards. “He was positive and to the right. He taught me to always be grateful and remember circumstances would change for the better, you just had to wait.”
Richards had a storied career in Kentucky sports, which included leading the Glasgow Scotties to a state championship in 1968.
As an assistant coach, he helped guide Western Kentucky to the 1971 Final Four.
He later served as head coach, leading the Hilltoppers to a Sweet 16 appearance in 1978.
Richards also served as the university’s men’s golf head coach and athletic director during his extensive legacy on the Hill.
“He is a man that will be well missed,” former WKU player Johnny Britt said, a 1976 All-American who was coached by Richards. “Everybody loves him, and we are going to miss him dearly around the Hill.”
While known to many as “Coach,” family members noted his proudest roles were as a husband, father and grandfather.
“That man brought nothing but joy to the people around him and never stopped being with us throughout his life,” Richards’ grandson, Curtis Richards said. “Including with Grandma, who was coaching her every day.”
Though Tuesday’s gathering was a funeral on paper, those who filled the arena treated the service as a celebration of Richards’ life.
“Rest in peace, Coach,” Ray said. “There will never be another one like you on this earth, and he gave so much to his family, to his friends, and to this great university. Go Tops!”
