Man found dead after reported shooting in Knott County

KITE, Ky. – One man is dead following a reported shooting Monday night in the Kite community of Knott County.

According to Trooper Matt Gayheart, Kentucky State Police public affairs officer for Post 13, troopers received a report regarding the shooting around 9:39 p.m. and responded to the 13000 block of KY-7.

Authorities say they located a male subject, later identified as 55-year-old Terry Short of Kite, with multiple gunshot wounds. Terry Short was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County Coroner’s Office.

Troopers say a preliminary investigation revealed an altercation took place between Terry Short and 44-year-old Robert Short of Kite.

According to authorities, during the argument, a gun was shot, striking Terry Short.

Robert Short was located at the scene and taken into custody. Authorities say he was transported to the Kentucky River Regional Jail.

He is charged with one count of murder.

An autopsy has been scheduled with the Kentucky Office of the State Medical Examiner in Frankfort. The investigation remains ongoing.
