Cal Turner Rehab marks 30 years in Scottsville
SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. (WNKY) — Med Center Health celebrated 30 years of Cal Turner Rehab & Specialty Care on Thursday, recognizing a facility that has provided long-term care and rehabilitation services to Scottsville and the surrounding region for three decades.
The 110-bed facility is part of a medical complex built on a 12-acre site on Burnley Road. The land was donated by Cal Turner Sr. and the Turner Family Trust.
The complex includes The Medical Center at Scottsville and the adjoining long-term care and rehabilitation facility, originally known as the Cal Turner Extended Care Pavilion.
A legacy rooted in giving back
Cal Turner’s granddaughter, Katherine Sikora, attended the anniversary celebration and reflected on the values she says are still visible in the facility’s work.
“The value of love. Giving back. Taking care of your and your fellow neighbor. And doing it in a heartfelt and genuine way,” Sikora said. “My grandfather was an extremely humble man, godly man. And he just felt like we’re supposed to give back and take care of everyone around us.”
Sikora, executive director of the Laura Goad Turner Charitable Foundation, called it “very humbling and heartwarming” to see her grandfather’s name still connected to the facility 30 years later.
She also pointed to the staff and administration, crediting them with carrying that work forward through the years.
Care before returning home
Eric Hagan, Med Center Health’s vice president of rural hospitals, said Cal Turner Rehab serves patients who may be ready to leave the hospital but still need skilled care before they can safely return home.
“There’s a lot of times where people don’t have the support or resources that they need at home to help continue that care to make sure that they stay out of the hospital,” Hagan said.
He said that care can include IV antibiotic therapy, physical rehabilitation and wound care.
For families, location can matter just as much as the care itself.
“Decisions about long-term care are tough for everybody,” Hagan said. “It’s tough for the family. It’s tough for the individual when you think about, you know, some of the independence that you’re giving up.”
Hagan said having care close to home can make visits easier and reduce the added burden of travel.
Cal Turner Rehab & Specialty Care remains connected to The Medical Center at Scottsville and is the only facility in the region attached to a hospital offering 24-hour physician care.
Thursday’s celebration looked back on the facility’s history while recognizing the people who have helped sustain its work for 30 years.
