Scottsville program celebrates Kentucky’s musical heritage

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. (WNKY) – Kentucky’s musical heritage took center stage Monday night during a free program at the Allen County Public Library.

The Scottsville Conservatory partnered with the library for “From the Porch to the Stage,” featuring songs written by Kentucky songwriters across a variety of genres.

The event was part of Allen County’s America 250 celebration and highlighted the diversity of Kentucky’s musical history.

Chelsea Howard, assistant director of the Allen County Public Library, said the program showed that Kentucky’s musical heritage extends well beyond country and bluegrass.

“I think it’s more diverse than people expected it to be,” Howard said. “It’s not just bluegrass and country.”

John “Johnny” Thompson, founder and director of the Scottsville Conservatory, said the event was an opportunity to put the spotlight on Kentucky music.

“All music is local music,” Thompson said.
