Substitute teacher arrested after allegedly bringing weapon to McCreary Co. school

WHITLEY CITY, Ky. – A substitute teacher has been arrested after allegedly bringing a knife with him onto school grounds in McCreary County.

According to the Kentucky State Police, on Aug. 20, KSP Post 11 was contacted regarding a complaint that a substitute teacher had brought a knife onto school property.

Authorities say a preliminary investigation determined that on Aug. 13, 72-year-old Gilbert Irvin of Whitley City brought a knife onto school grounds.

During this time, troopers say school staff did not believe Irvin posed any threat to the students or staff at the school on the property, but his employment was terminated by the school board.

Authorities say a warrant was issued for Irvin, who was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on school property. The investigation remains ongoing.
