WKU Soccer draws 1-1 with UAB

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Soccer (1-0-2) ended the match in a draw against UAB (1-1-1) with a final score of 1-1 at the WKU Soccer Complex on Thursday evening. The Hilltoppers scored early in the first half, but the Blazers equalized the score late in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hilltoppers came out hot early in the first half out shooting the Blazers 6-3. UAB threatened in the eighth minute of play, but a diving save to the right from goalkeeper Mia Riddick kept the score even at zero. In the 15th minute, April McDonald broke through on a header that would bounce over the keeper’s head off a corner kick from Georgia Liapis to give WKU the 1-0 lead.
In the 59th minute of play, the Blazers drew a free kick and managed to get off three shots. Riddick proved again to be a force in the goal saving all three shots. A few moments later, UAB equalized the score at 1-1 off a corner kick. In the final few minutes, WKU made an effort to reclaim the lead getting three more shots off but were unable to get through the keeper.

“It felt good to get the first one,” said graduate midfielder April McDonald. “Really Georgia just played a great ball. It came straight to me. I was just there in the right place.”

- April McDonald’s goal was her first of the 2026 season and the fourth of her career.
- Georgia Liapis recorded her first assist of the season and the sixth of her career.
