Schlottmann fitting well in Titans revamped offensive line

NASHVILLE, Tn. –  The pads are on in Week Two of training camp for the Tennessee Titans, and the intensity is ramping up.

All position groups are working to get closer to game time tempo, especially the offensive line who a year ago allowed rookie quarterback Cam Ward to be sacked 55 times, which tied for the most in the NFL.

As they work to create a safer workplace environment, head coach Robert Saleh says the room is far from being solidified just yet, but center Austin Schlottmann, a new addition, has been working to protect number one.

“He’s stable, he knows the system, he’s doing a really nice job in there. He’s holding up really well. (He’s) a great communicator, gets us in the right protections. He gets us in the right call, whether it’s run or pass,” Saleh said.

“It’ll be good to see as preseason goes, going to San Francisco, working against those guys, and then again, getting an opportunity versus Seattle and Chicago. So, he’s doing a really, really nice job so far.”

Schlottmann came to Tennessee from the New York Giants, alongside the team’s new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, and has been granted plenty of reps to this point.

He faces a Titans defensive line in practice that features some of the top names in the league, and that has allowed him to unlock more in his game this summer.

“Kind of as a whole offense, we’re trending in the right direction,” Schlottmann said. “We’re getting better. We’re kind of finding things we’re good at in the run game. We’re protecting well in the pass game…Yeah, I think it’s going well.”

While it’s nice to see improvement in any form for the Titans, who look to become a more consistent resident of the end zone, they must remember that it’s just one small piece in a much bigger process.

“I feel like we’re still gluing the pieces together. We came a long way, but we still got a long way to go,” running back Tyjae Spears said.
