SoKY’s Choice: Med Center Health opens 74-year-old time capsule sealed in 1952

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WNKY) – As Med Center Health celebrates its 100th anniversary, leaders took a step back in time Sunday by opening a time capsule that had been sealed beneath the cornerstone of City Hospital since 1952.

The capsule was placed inside the cornerstone during the dedication of a hospital expansion in 1952. Inside were photographs, a Bible, a newspaper, historical documents and handwritten notes that offered a glimpse into what life looked like more than seven decades ago.

Med Center Health President and CEO Connie Smith said the capsule represented more than a collection of artifacts.

“As we prepare to open this time capsule, we’re reminded that history is more than dates and artifacts,” Smith said. “It’s the story of people who cared enough to build something that would endure for generations.”

Cristi Pruitt, Med Center Health’s vice president of accounting and finance and the organization’s unofficial historian, said the capsule was rediscovered after she found a historic newspaper photo while researching the hospital’s past.

“Last fall, while scouring the Daily News archives, I happened upon this photo. And beneath the caption read, ‘A time capsule is buried.’ No one knew this existed,” Pruitt said.

Pruitt said the people who sealed the capsule in 1952 could never have imagined the advances in healthcare that would come over the next 74 years.

“They could have never imagined robotic surgery, MRI scanners, electronic medical records or life-saving treatments that were still decades away,” Pruitt said. “But they did believe in one thing with absolute complete confidence. They believed that this hospital would continue to serve its community long after they were gone. Today, we are the beneficiaries of that faith.”

The capsule’s contents reflected everyday life in 1952 while preserving the history of City Hospital, which opened in 1926 before growing into today’s Med Center Health system.

Joe Natcher, chairman of Commonwealth Hospital Corporation, said the organization remains focused on the same mission that inspired community leaders a century ago.

“One hundred years ago, community leaders had a vision to create a hospital that would care for their neighbors close to home,” Natcher said. “I believe they would recognize something that has never changed… the commitment to caring for people in this community.”

As the ceremony concluded, Pruitt reflected on the significance of preserving history for future generations.

“One day, another generation may gather to open a time capsule that we leave behind,” Pruitt said. “May they look back on us with the same gratitude and the admiration that we feel today.”
