BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – On Thursday, Western Kentucky University said goodbye to two of its oldest residence halls.

The university plans to demolish Douglas Keen Hall and Hugh Poland Hall and invited students, alumni and staff to take part in a farewell event.

The event featured a memory wall where attendees could share their favorite moments, along with giveaways and an opportunity to leave handprints inside Douglas Keen Hall.

“Students are moving out this week, and finals are next week,” said WKU Spiritmaster Haley Fowler. “Once everyone is cleared out, construction will begin on a new residence hall.”

As the university closes this chapter, students and staff are looking ahead to what’s next.

“This is a time to celebrate these residence halls and the memories made here,” Fowler said. “The new space will offer a fresh experience and better living opportunities for students on the Hill.”

University leaders say the new residence hall will focus on improving the student experience.

“Our biggest goal is to elevate the student experience in every way, including the amenities we offer,” said Catherine LaRoche, assistant vice president for student engagement. “We still want to keep those community aspects, like pod lounges and 24-hour study spaces.”

LaRoche says the new building may also include dining options and additional spaces designed to foster community.

According to university officials, the new residence hall is expected to house more than 1,000 students and offer updated amenities, including private bathrooms.
