Local hospital sees patients for over 100 fall-related injuries since winter storm
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Though many roads are now clear, some ice continues to create slick, and at times hazardous, conditions in Bowling Green.
One local hospital is sharing that the impact has been noticeable, with multiple patients reporting fall-related injuries.
According to Emily McGuffey, registered nurse and director of the emergency department and trauma center at The Medical Center at Bowling Green, the hospital has seen well over 100 fall-related injuries since this last winter storm in January.
McGuffey says these injuries have ranged from bruises to even broken bones and head bleeds. She confirms the injuries are related to recent weather conditions and that this has shown an overall increase in these types of injuries compared to last year.
However, there are safer ways you can get to your destination.
McGuffey says, “As far as safety, I would recommend being very selective on what shoes you wear. Make sure that you have non-slip rubber soles that have good traction on them. If you are walking on any bridges, stairs, walkways, if there is an arm rail, try to hold onto that if possible, that will help you keep your balance.”
McGuffey says for immediate at-home care, she recommends going inside to assess the injury, try an ice pack, rest, and if it continues to impact the ability to walk and everyday activities, she recommends seeking treatment.
If you must walk on ice, she says to take slow, steady steps and to point your feet outward and slightly bend your knees.
Finally, McGuffey says to watch for black ice, which can be shiny, clear and hard to see but can present a slippery surface.
