WKU Player of the Week: Hilltopper forward Grant Newell
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This week’s WKU Athletics Player of the Week is Hilltopper men’s basketball forward Grant Newell!
Newell in two games at home last week averaged 20 points, 7.5 rebounds and 0.5 blocks.
The senior from Chicago put up a career-best performance in Friday’s matchup with Tulsa, scoring 28 points behind 6-8 from three-point land.
Newell’s game wasn’t strictly limited to outside the perimeter, in fact his ability to attack the basket led to nine free throw attempts in both games, where the forward cashed in 15 points from the charity stripe.
In addition to his offensive production, Newell brought down a season-best nine rebounds and played a career-high 34 minutes.
He shared more about his mindset on the court after taking on the Golden Hurricane.
“ My teammates believe in me, Coach Hank’s been harping on me to, whenever the ball’s coming inside, I’ll be ready to shoot the ball, and that’s something that I work on all the time,” Newell said. “I always have confidence, it’s just sometimes they’re going in, sometimes they’re not. I feel like tonight I was a lot more focused and I’ve been a lot more decisive and determined to shoot the ball so that helps.”
