Experience the Geminids Meteor Shower at Mammoth Cave National Park

MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. – Mammoth Cave National Park is hosting a star party for the Geminids meteor shower on Saturday, Dec. 13.
From 5 to 9 p.m. that night, park officials say the public is invited for a free, family-friendly event.
The evening will kick off with a special ranger-led program in the outdoor amphitheater at 5 p.m. This will be followed by stargazing and meteor viewing from 6 to 9 p.m. in the bus loop behind the Mammoth Cave National Park Visitor Center.
In addition, Mammoth Cave National Park says telescopes will be available for planet and nebulae viewing.
Knowledgeable rangers as well as volunteers from the WKU Hilltopper Astronomy Club, Dark Sky Kentucky and the Louisville Astronomical Society will be on hand as well to provide assistance, park officials say.
The event will take place entirely outdoors, according to park officials.
Participants are encouraged to prepare for cold temperatures and dress in warm, layered clothing. They are also encouraged to bring additional blankets, chairs and hot beverages for a more comfortable experience.
The Geminids meteor shower is known for bright and fast meteors, “with dozens appearing each hour,” according to Mammoth Cave National Park.
Mammoth Cave National Park states it has been certified since 2021 as an International Dark-Sky Park, providing an ideal setting for night sky viewing all year long.
