Logan Co. and Russellville high school seniors compete in the annual ‘Seniors Helping Seniors’ event
RUSSELLVILLE, Ky.- On Wednesday in Russellville, four high school seniors from both Logan County and Russellville high school competed in the annual “Seniors Helping Seniors” at Crossroads IGA.
The event is sponsored by Crossroads IGA, Independence Bank and BRADD and sees the seniors from the rival schools competing to see who can collect the most groceries in a 90-second time limit.
The winning school gets a $500 prize from Independence Bank, but all of the groceries collected by both schools will be donated to local seniors in the community that are in need.
The event not only provides these high school seniors an opportunity to give back and help a part of their community in need but gives them a chance to do so in a fun way.
“Part of our education system is making good citizens. And so by including those seniors in the school system, in this program that helps build their citizenship you know, ownership of our community is helping our neighbors out,” said Chad Hall, president of the Logan County Independence Bank.
The event provides them a fun way to give back to their community and also keeps the rivalry going between both Russellville and Logan County High Schools.
Both schools tried to collect as much as they could, filling their shopping carts to the point they had trouble keeping everything in trying to get the victory.
In the end, Logan County would end up getting the win in a narrow victory.
When asked about the competition between both schools, store manager Kim Nolan said, “Oh that’s wonderful. They get into it. You know, it’s like, hey, we could beat you. You know, and it’s every year it gets just a little bit more competitive every year. So yeah, that that just makes it fun for them. And it teaches them a good lesson too.”
Between both schools, over $4,ooo in food was collected and will be donated to the elderly in need. Logan County was awarded a $500 prize for winning and will go toward anything the school needs. The Cougars will donate these groceries to local seniors next week.
