Smith makes Franklin-Simpson athletics history, signs with North Alabama softball
FRANKLIN, Ky. – It’s officially December, meaning ’tis the holiday season, but it’s also signing season for high school athletes across the country, and Monday morning Lady Cat Kloie Smith made history with her commitment to play softball at the University of North Alabama.
Smith is set to join the Lions, making her the first ever division one softball commit from Franklin-Simpson High School.
She is a talented multi-sport athlete who played a big role in Franklin’s trip to Rupp Arena last season, but she says her true calling is on the softball diamond.
Smith put up crazy numbers in 2024, leading the Lady Cats to their first 13th district title since 2018.
After signing to become the backstop for UNA in just a year, she shared more on her love for the position and the game.
“ I love catching. I didn’t start catching until eighth grade. I made a bet with my coaches if I hit a home run, then I get to catch and I got to catch one game, and then he just decided that he wanted me catching, so then I ended up just catching all four years,” Smith said. “I’ve been playing it since I was like a baby. My mom played it, she wanted to go to college for it, so I think I just carried on the tradition.”
