BGISD students learn all things agriculture
ALLEN COUNTY, Ky. — Students from Bowling Green Independent School District spent the day at Need More Acres Farm learning how food goes from the field to the table.
The visit was part of the district’s Farm to School program, which connects classroom lessons to real-world agricultural experiences.
Dalla Emerson, director of food service operations for BGISD, said the partnership helps students understand the science behind growing and harvesting crops.
“It’s kind of become part of who we are,” Emerson said. “The kids get to see exactly what’s happening in the field and how nature plays a role in their food.”
Farm owner Michelle Howell said she and her husband started farming full-time to encourage the next generation to consider agriculture as a career.
“We believe we need more farmers, and we want these kids to see that farming is a viable occupation,” Howell said.
Second grader Eden Beckham said the trip was both fun and educational, adding that it made her think about farming in a new way. Emerson said the goal is for students to make a “full-circle connection” between the earth and the classroom.
Each student left with dried fruit, a spaghetti squash and a deeper understanding of how nature and agriculture work together.
