Barren County Detention Center holds BBQ fundraiser for employee fighting cancer

BARREN COUNTY, Ky.- The Barren County community is coming together to support one of their own, Lt. County Liaison Bonya Scott, as she battles stage three cancer.

Scott, who has risen through the ranks at the Barren County Detention Center, was diagnosed in August during a routine checkup—despite having no symptoms.

She later learned the cancer was triple-negative, a particularly aggressive form known for spreading quickly.

“It probably would have spread to my lungs or brain if we had waited longer,” Scott shared.

Jailor Aaron Shirley emphasized the department’s commitment to helping her not just emotionally but financially with treatment costs.

The support has poured in through fundraisers and community efforts, showing Scott she is far from alone in this fight.

“My work family has been amazing,” she said, reflecting on the impact of their efforts. With love from both her family and community, Scott finds strength and motivation to keep fighting.
