The importance of breast cancer research

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- World Breast Cancer Research Day is coming up, drawing attention to ongoing efforts in the fight against the disease.

In Kentucky, the breast cancer mortality rate remains above the national average. One major contributing factor is obesity, which is linked to a 35-40 percent increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Dr. Ren Xu, a professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Science, says both clinical and animal studies show that obesity can accelerate breast cancer progression. He adds that obesity is also linked to a poorer prognosis in patients.

Experts urge individuals, especially those diagnosed, to make healthy dietary changes. A better diet can help reduce the risk and possibly improve outcomes for patients.

As World Breast Cancer Research Day approaches, awareness and prevention remain key priorities.
