Butler County Fiscal Court discusses removal of Woodbury dam
WOODBURY, Ky. – Butler County’s history and its early growth can be traced back to the boating traffic that used to flow on the Green River.
Now, there’s a possibility that a piece of that history could vanish completely. Woodbury is home to the Green River Lock and Dam Number 4, also known as the Woodbury Dam. The lock and dam has remained out of use since 1965 after the dam suffered a failure. Since then it has been come a fishing hot spot and recreational site.
The Butler County Fiscal Court has been discussing the official removal of the dam citing safety issues to the public that frequent the site.
“There is a safety issue there. People walking out past them, falling, all falling down. You know, there’s about a 20 to 25-foot drop straight down and in and during high water. It’s also a concern safety there too. Someone getting out, possibly drowning. No one wants to see that happen,” said Butler County judge-executive Tim Fleener.
Some Butler County residents are fighting for its survival however, pointing to the history of the dam and its service to Butler County and the Woodbury community. There will be another fiscal court meeting held on July 14 that will help decide the future of the site.
Judge Fleener says that the meeting will be open to the public.
