Pair of mass graves found in Allen County cemetery by Simpson County Historical Society

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – Crews with the Simpson County Historical Society were called to Allen County to help scan the Old City Cemetery and made a fascinating discovery.

Using Ground Penetrating Radar, also known as GPR, Billy Wilkerson says he found what appears to be at least two mass graves, which are known to hold multiple bodies.

Mass graves were common during times of war, but not much is known about this one just yet.

However, Wilkerson shared what he saw that day.

“One was 17 feet long, and one was 83 feet long… and it was in the back part of the cemetery. We did find right at 170 unmarked graves so far, which is that’s all just raw data. There’s nothing… till I go through the data and confirm all the targets that we’ve seen. We’ll know definitely here in the next couple of days,” he says.

Wilkerson says he was called in by the City of Scottsville Preservation Commission and the Allen County Historical Society to investigate. He’s heading back Monday to finish out the rest of the scanning.
