New Sonic Landscape exhibit at the Kentucky Museum
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A new exhibit at the Kentucky Museum is tuning into the rich musical roots of south central Kentucky—and bringing long-overdue recognition to the people behind the sound.
Led by Museum Director Brent Bjorkman, Sonic Landscape is set to open on September 6th, offering an immersive look at the region’s deep and diverse musical heritage.
“Before social media, the record store was your connection point—where you found bands, bass players, community,” said Bjorkman. “We’re trying to tell the full story of that culture.”
The exhibit aims to highlight local artists, bands, and venues that have shaped the area’s sound—many of whom haven’t received the spotlight they deserve.
“Sometimes they’re not celebrated, and that’s what this is about—validating voices and traditions,” Bjorkman added.
Through audio, visuals, and storytelling, Sonic Landscape will give visitors a chance to experience the music that helped define the region, while offering a new appreciation for Bowling Green’s cultural identity.
“This is a way to educate people who might not even know about Bowling Green or WKU,” Bjorkman said. “Music flows constantly here—whether people make their name locally or globally.”
The Kentucky Museum hopes the exhibit will connect generations and spark new conversations around shared musical roots.
