Local nonprofit gets surprise gift from Amazon
BOWLING GREEN Ky.-Amazon announced the #Deliveringsmiles program, where the corporation selects hundreds of charities across the county to donate items to. One recipient was Bowling Green’s Room In The Inn.
“I feel like we won the lottery. It’s so exciting because Room in the Inn is a very small organization,” said Room in the Inn program director Sharli Rogers.
It wasn’t just a few items. 6 boxes filled with long underwear, men’s boxers, and backpacks were waiting at the post office Monday morning. Something both staff and guests weren’t expecting.
“They gave from the heart instead of just nickel and diming,” said Room in the Inn guest Philavery Downey Mcintyre.
It doesn’t stop there. 6 more boxes are on the way, which will include cots for the guests to use. Room in the Inn relies on volunteers and donations to get what they need, making this delivery of smiles even more impactful to the staff.
“It’s overwhelming to think that a big corporation like Amazon would even know about Room in the Inn in Bowling Green,” said Room in the Inn board member Janet Yaeger.
As the cold month of January approaches, this is a stepping stone for guests to make themselves at home.
“Amazon opening its wallet and dropping off boxes of long johns tops and bottoms says a lot,” McIntyre said.
