Kentucky soldier accounted for from WWII

A World War II soldier from Kentucky has finally been accounted for and will be laid to rest in the Commonwealth soon.

U.S. Army Private First Class, 29-year-old Kenneth Burgess of Central City, was marked missing in action during World War II and was accounted for in September of this year.

Burgess was reportedly killed in action in the vicinity of the Sala, Italy during Operation Avalanche.

His body was not recovered, and the Germans never reported him as a prisoner of war.

The war department declared him non-recoverable on May 10 of 1948.

A DNA investigation led to the discovery and identification of his body.

Burgess’ name is recorded on the walls of the Missing at Sicily-Rome American Cemetery. He will be buried in Central City in May.
