WKU Athletics Player of the Week: Michael Mathison
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – This week’s WKU Athletics Player of the Week goes to a member of the Hilltopper football squad, wide receiver Michael Mathison!
Mathison’s performance against the UTEP Miners last Thursday night helped keep the Tops undefeated at home, and served as quite the comeback game for the senior out of Covington, Ga.
After missing the entirety of 2023 with an injury, head coach Tyson Helton has eased Mathison back into the receiving core through the team’s first six games, but at Houchens-Smith Stadium under those Thursday night lights, he was able to put up the best performance from a Hilltopper wideout in 2024.
On just four total touches, Mathison recorded three touchdowns, two in the air from quarterback Caden Veltkamp and one on the ground.
The outing marks the first time a Hilltopper has put up three scores in the same game since Dalvin Smith did so in last year’s Famous Toastery Bowl victory over Old Dominion.
In his first year with WKU back in 2022, Mathison recorded three total touchdowns across 14 games played, but in just five this season, he has now doubled his career total on the Hill.
Mathison and the WKU football team have a road matchup with Sam Houston set for Wednesday night, and they will look to remain perfect in Conference USA play with a big win over the Bearkats.
