Pumpkin Man brings smiles to Morgantown one gourd at a time
MORGANTOWN, KY.- The fall season is finally here, and for many, pumpkin picking is at the top of the to-do list. From quirky Green Goblin pumpkins to bright, round classics, the choices are endless. One generous Morgantown man is making this autumn tradition even more special by opening his home for a free pumpkin giveaway.
Denton Pharis, the pumpkin delivery man tells us how the journey began. He says, “I used to have a produce stand,” he shared. “Barry called me one day and asked how many pumpkins I had. When I told him 300, he said he would buy them all and give them away. I thought he was crazy!” What began nine years ago with just over 300 pumpkins has transformed into an annual event where thousands are gifted to the community.
Barry Whitaker, also known as the Pumpkin Man shares the joy he finds in watching children pick their pumpkins. “You know, when I see a little kid peeking out from behind a big pumpkin, that’s my favorite moment,” he said. “Carving pumpkins was such a special experience for me as a child.” His mission is to ensure that kids today can have similar joyful experiences.
Pharis also says, Everyone, regardless of age, is invited to explore the wide variety of pumpkins available. “We’ve got every kind of size, shape, and color,” he mentioned. “There are white pumpkins, orange pumpkins, and even some warty ones!” This incredible selection ensures that everyone can find their perfect pumpkin.
But it’s more than just choosing a pumpkin; it’s the joy on the kids’ faces that truly makes it worthwhile. “It’s so much fun to see the kids smile and carry their pumpkins around,” he added. “For the next two days, it’ll be a blast around here!”
As the leaves change and the air cools, this Morgantown tradition serves as a reminder of the simple joys of fall and the joy of carving out some fun into your weekend.
