LifeSkills offers tips for peers to help those suffering from suicidal thoughts

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – September is Suicide Prevention Month, and staff at LifeSkills want to make sure that everyone has a support system they can talk to.

For those in school, you may think about going to a guidance counselor or teacher, but it may be just as easy to talk to a classmate.

We spoke to the Community Support Program Manager at LifeSkills, who told us some tips for those classmates on what signs to look for in their peers.

“Sometimes it’s just recognizing and noticing different things in people and the changes and how they are interacting with their friends or, not being involved in school and going to that person and checking in with them and asking them if they’re okay or if they’ve heard something. Just kind of having those conversations and being that one on one support for them,” Amy Hinton says.

She also says if you don’t feel comfortable talking to a classmate or guidance counselor, find someone in your school to talk to. Even if it’s a janitor, having someone to confide in is vital to making sure a life is saved.
