Kiddie Parade brings generations together in Russellville for Fourth of July

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky.- The Col. Benjamin Logan Chapter of Sons of American Revolution put on their annual patriotic Kiddie Parade to not only honor the creator of this parade, Bob and Joyce Guion, but also as an opportunity to teach future generations some Russellville history.

Carol Switcher, a member of the Guion family, said, “We started this originally when I was in elementary school. We had a lot of children in the neighborhood, and we just decided we were going to. We just needed a Fourth of July parade, so it’s really cool that we’ve got four generations here. “

This year, the streets flooded with hundreds of kids, along with their creative bikes, scooters and so much more.

Chairman of the Kiddie Parade, David Guion, says, “As they moved to this location, the parade came, became larger and became an annual event that everybody looked forward to, to bring their children, grandchildren. We’re talking about four or five generations now that have been in the parade. “

The positive impact that this parade had on the community in the past is making even more of a difference now because of the knowledge the children gain from this experience.

Therese Rushing, another member of the Guion family, says, “Some of the things, some of the things that my grandma always made important were things like, you don’t walk in front of the flag and you respect the flag. And we feel her here. I wear her bow and it’s a lot of fun.”

This patriotic parade gives children and their families the chance to unite with other families.

“That’s what means so much to us, that we can give them something to do,” she says. “You know, they go other places, so I’m sure where their families are, whether it’s in Russellville or any other community. But this is something for them, and every child here has a big smile on their face.”
