The Salvation Army of Bowling Green delivers doughnuts for National Doughnut Day
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- It’s National Doughnut Day, and doughnut makers across the area are seeing a steady flow of customers.
Operating manager at Great American Donut Shop, Yong Thing, says, “Extra traffic today, a few more than we usually have for Friday, just I think because it’s National Doughnut Day.”
Groovy Gus Mini Donuts and Great American Donut Shop are two local favorites.
Yong Taing adds, “Community support is everything, that’s why we’re here for 35 years because of the local customers. Every day, people come and get doughnuts for breakfast and special occasions but we do have, I say a lot of our customers are local repeat customers”
The Salvation Army of Bowling Green has a different connection to the sweetness of today. In 1938, the Salvation Army in Chicago started National Donut Day, honoring the donut lassies that delivered doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
Captain Monica Harton at the Bowling Green Salvation Army, says, “National Donut Day is a big deal because it’s just another reflection of the work the Salvation Army is doing and highlighting when there’s a need, the Salvation Army is going to try to come to the aid of those in need.”
Bowling Green Salvation Army continues the trend of the donut lassies today by bringing doughnuts to its partners and local organizations to show appreciation for the ongoing support.
Harton adds, “We’re always needing volunteers, so we get volunteers from local churches and from businesses, so that was a part of this today is just celebrating those people that are helping us do good in the community.”
