Read to shelter dogs through Hart County Animal Shelter’s Book Buddies
HART COUNTY, Ky.- Hart County Animal Shelter is connecting people with pups, and not just through adoptions but through reading.
Book Buddies is a new program that started a few months ago that engages readers with dogs in search of their fur-ever home, most of which need human interaction and socialization.
Shelter officials tell us this program is beneficial, not only to the dogs but to those reading as well.
One volunteer at the Hart County Animal Shelter, Devon Avery, “It felt like a really natural pairing to put kids or even adults and books together together. It reduces stress and anxiety in the pets. It gives people practice on their reading comprehension and fluency, and also dogs are nonjudgmental.”
Readers of all ages are invited, and those under 18 should be accompanied by a supervising adult.
Book Buddies will be available every Wednesday afternoon, and if you are interested, the Hart County Animal Shelter asks that you call ahead before arrival. If you are searching for a new friend, the shelter is also in code red, and is full of dogs ready to find a family.
