Flooding leaves an estimated 20% of Butler County cropland underwater

MORGANTOWN, Ky.- Butler County has seen a lot of damage from Sunday’s storm, but one recurring problem the last few weeks has been flooding.

Butler County runs along the Green River, and has many areas that fill with water, flooding into nearby cropland.

Farmers make every effort to replant any crop that has been damaged by flooding, and some have already replanted once or twice this season.

Officials tell us an estimate of 20% of Butler County cropland is currently underwater.

Butler County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension agent, Greg Drake, says, “We’re used to flooding, we’re used to planting a few acres we’ll have to replant. Everyone that is a row crop farmer in Butler County is used to that. What we’re not used to is having it happen again, and again. And going into June, we still really haven’t had a great opportunity to plant this 2024 crop.”

Farmers will wait until the water has receded, and the soil has dried before they replant once again.
