BOWLING GREEN, Ky – On the third week of May, the National Weather Association holds their annual awareness campaign.

This year, the National Safe Boating week is from May 18-24. With Memorial Day weekend nearing, it is important for residents to practice safe boating.

Safety tips for operating a boat:

  • Must be 12 years or older to operate a boat.
  • “Slowest speed possible to maintain maneuverability” of a boat is Kentucky law.
  • Follow navigation rules
  • Utilize the engine cut-off switch when necessary.
  • Take a boating safety course.

There are 50 to 100 boating accidents in Kentucky annually due to negligence. Make sure your boat and passengers are prepared adequately.

Safety tips for passengers:

  • Wear life vests.
  • Plan for the water temperature instead of air temperature.
  • Dress properly/in layers.
  • Be wary of carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Do not drink in operation.
