Daylight saving time is coming, are you ready?

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Time will spring an hour forward, which means we’ll all lose an hour of sleep coming this Sunday.

A lot of controversy surrounds daylight saving time but whether or not you’re a fan, adjusting your sleep schedule is just a bridge that must be crossed if you’re not wanting to feel groggy in the following mornings. News 40 spoke to a sleep technician and a pediatrician about how to stay on top of the lost hour.

Experts told us that the best thing to do is just simply start going to bed early. No screens at least an hour before bed and not alcohol or caffeine. The blue light in our phones, laptops and such keeps the brain active and slows the release of melatonin, the chemical that helps us sleep. A helpful tip would be to try and go to bed 15 minutes earlier, leading up to the time change.

For younger kids, try to get in some physical activity early in the day and have them partake in more lax activities in the evening such as a board game or reading a book. Sunlight changes brain chemistry so as the days get longer, it will take longer for sleepiness the kick in, so a good recommendation is a change or curtains to keep the room dark.

It’s not unheard of sleep issues to be exacerbated by the shift in our circadian rhythm, so if you struggle with insomnia or something of the like, this could be a difficult time.
