Eastern Elementary is sharing the love to the National Guard over seas

BARREN COUNTY, Ky.- What started as penny wars to help three members of the National Guard, grew bigger than Eastern Elementary School could imagine. The elementary school and the community are donating and creating care packages for the national guardsmen who are overseas.

The opportunity to create and give back, gave the students a chance to learn and understand the value of supporting the people who serve this country and their families.

Britten Foster who is on the 5th grade district student council shares how it feels to help with the care packages. Britten says, “I love supporting the military so much because it’s just so sweet to do, and for the little children, their dads are overseas and they’re fighting for our country.”

Haley Johnson, a counselor at Eastern Elementary School shares, that giving back is not the only goal for Eastern Elementary School, the staff wants their students to leave inspired.  Haley says, “I hope at the end of all of this it lets these kids know that no matter where they go in the future, Eastern is always a home and a family for them and that we support them. And then the kids whose families aren’t overseas, I hope they see, you know, that was something really cool and amazing that we did for these families and for our friends. ”

The goal was to raise $250, but Eastern Elementary ended up raising over $600. They will be shipping out more care packages filled with coffee because of the popular demand from the soldiers.
