Metcalfe County Schools hold farm to school event

EDMONTON Ky.-The Metcalfe County Farm to School program had elementary school students trade a day in the classroom for a day in the field. Metcalfe Elementary students learned where their food comes from, what can be done with crops and more about careers in agriculture. The goal was to get the high school students to teach the young sprouts.

“We have decided that servanthood and serving our community and serving our younger hornets is a key ingredient for success after high school,” said Metcalfe County High School Principal Clint Graham.

At the different booths lined through the corn field, students learned where food travels, careers in agriculture, and what can be made with corn, providing a hands-on experience.

“We have a lot of fun in class and we try to incorporate as much hands-on learning as we possibly can. It just adds to what we’re doing in the classroom,” said Metcalfe County High School food science teacher Lynn Hawkins.

As the young hornets buzzed around the field, the high school students said it was a treat to teach their young peers.

“They find it interesting and fun. It means a lot to me to spread the word about agriculture because it’s an important part of their life,” said Metcalfe County High School sophomore Luke South.

The young hornets say they had an amazing time as well.

“It’s very exciting to learn from the high schoolers when they know stuff better. I want to know corn facts to help me learn,” said Metcalfe County Elementary third-grade student Hailey Silva.
