Locally created app for pregnant, postpartum women has launched

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- A new app to change health outcomes for mothers and newborns has just launched.

BumptUp Labs is a new app that helps pregnant and postpartum women become and stay active with tailored workouts, social support, and yoga classes, as well as weight, calorie and symptom tracking.

Western Kentucky University associate professor of exercise science, mom of four, and BumptUp CEO, Rachel Tinius, says “I’ve been doing research with exercise during pregnancy through all four of my pregnancies, the app was in the works over the past two. And I’ve definitely utilized my own personal experiences to help form a lot of features of the app. It’s hard to fully understand the mind and body of a pregnant woman unless you’re in those shoes, so I’ve been fortunate to be in those shoes a couple of times.”

Experts say 90% of pregnant women are not meeting the recommended physical activity guidelines. Being overweight during pregnancy poses health risks to both the mother and child.

When talking of BumptUp, Tinius says, “One of the main reasons that we’re doing this too, is to get this app into the hands of women who aren’t already active. So how do we reach those women who may be struggling with weight, struggling with high blood pressure, and give them a resource that can help them have a happier and healthier pregnancy.”

Experts say the U.S. is the most dangerous developed nation to give birth in, and mental health and obesity are a big part of that. Being physically active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help put an end to this problem.

“To have something that’s personalized and tailored to your pregnancy or postpartum journey, we can also provide that as well. We really have something for everybody, and hopefully with it being a new year, when people are starting to be a little more incentivized to improve their health, we can be a part of that equation for pregnant and postpartum women.”

Experts say that healthy lifestyles and exercise during pregnancy can save you about $3,000. This app makes it easy for new and expecting mothers to get healthy while at home. BumptUp is now available on the App Store, and more information can be found at bumptupapp.com.
