Geminids meteor shower viewing at Mammoth Cave

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- Mammoth Cave National Park is hosting their last celestial event of the year. This night sky event is to see the Geminids Meteor Shower, which will showcase almost 50 meteors an hour.

The park after dark is a great place to view the meteor shower because viewing is best from a dark area. Mammoth Cave is an international dark sky park, perfect for this occasion. Western Kentucky Universities Astronomy Club also brings telescopes for viewing distant planets and nebula during the shower.

Molly Schroer with Mammoth Cave National Park says, “This is the last of our night sky events for 2023. We’ve had comet viewings, we’ve had other meteor shower viewings, and we’ve had events where we’ve looked at different moons. And even daytime events, where we’ve looked at eclipses and partial eclipses of the sun.”

The Geminids Meteor Shower Celebration will be at the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center on Thursday, Dec. 14 from 5:30 to 8:45 p.m.
