Dry weather not a problem for one outdoor activity

BOWLING GREEN, Ky- Over the last few weeks, weather conversations have been about the heat and the lack of rain. The recent dry weather means some outdoor activities have been impacted in a negative way. But there’s one outdoor place where it’s business as usual: Lost River Cave.

Chad Singer, a manager at Lost River Cave, says an underground aquifer helps absorb extra rainfall and stores it until the water eventually makes its way into the Lost River. And while it is possible to see water levels drop low enough to close the cave to boat tours, the aquifer’s constant supply means the cave can weather all but the most extreme dry spells.

Excessive rain is a different story. While the aquifer stores some of the rain, large amounts of rain in a short time make it to the cave fast enough to raise the water level and cause flooding.
